Broadband Home Central newsletter
Sandy Teger and Dave Waks are Broadband gurus who produce a regular newsletter on happenings in the Broadband technology arena. Particularly they focus upon 'the connected home'.
In their latest newsletter they discuss Intel's latest push to sell more chips, particularly their membership of the Digital Home Working Group
For devices to transparently collaborate on a service for the user, DHWG has defined an interoperability framework to allow the devices "to communicate with each other and exchange meaningful information." To quote from the DHWG's white paper (a PDF file), the framework includes:
Transparent connectivity between devices inside the digital home
Unified framework for device discovery, configuration and control
Interoperable media formats and streaming protocols
Interoperable media management and control framework
Compatible quality of service mechanisms
Compatible authentication and authorization mechanisms for users and devices.
The scope also includes methods for content owners to protect their digital content, and manageability and support for digital home devices.
The reason this interests me is the point made that DHWG and Intel will need to educate their publics about what these devices are, what they will do and why anyone would want to buy them.
Sounds like an uphill battle.
