The NE: a success story

BBC NEWS | Business | Manufacturing woes enable service growth

A gentle reminder that not all success in the UK is based around London and the south east. The North East, traditionally part of the industrial heartland of Britain was hit heavily in the 80's and 90's by recession and structural change in the economy. Despite this the area has seen a remarkable upturn(?) in its fortunes.

My ex-colleague Stuart is certainly part of an expanding service sector (least I assume consultancy is a service :) ).

I dearly hope this improvement is maintained. Having regional disparities is not good for the conomy as a whole and certainly not good for the social fabric of the country. The Jarrow march of 1936 being a perfect example.
