Intelligent e-mail software will eventually play a part in cleaning up information pollution, and less critical information could be shunted to a place you might visit once a day, like intranets with blogs or message boards.
Information pollution essentially prevents usability, so ignore the erxtraneous and concertrate on the 'good'. If technology allows humans to behave in such a way then they will. Exhortations for people to change behaviour will not work, we have to look to other methods. like changing the technology with a new paradigm. Don't know what that is yet but people, especially experts like Nielsen should accept that and move on.
