European Children flock to the Net

A report from Nielsen/NetRatings outlined on the BBC shows a rapid increase in children using the web, especially those under 12:

The most dramatic increase has come in the UK. Some 4.5 million of under-18s regularly log on to websites, an increase of more than 50% in a year.

This compares with three million children in Germany and 1.5 million in France, the two nearest rivals.

But it is the "tweenagers" - children under 12 - that are flocking to the net in ever increasing numbers.

Opportunities and dangers galore. While children accessing the web in increasing numbers is not unexpected, the number under 12 is interesting. The suggestion that this is due to broadband, the unmetered nature and the always on faetures is a positive too.

BB Isps now need to capitalise on this by providing services aimed at children (or rather parents of children). They obviously need to think in wider terms about scoietal needs and ensure safety concerns are paramount, however they can do this and provide an excellent service too. Come on people lets see it!
